Poke Me, Like Me, Facebook Me, Please

Facebook. We love it, even if we hate to admit it. It's a great way to chat with your roommate when you're too lazy to get out of bed, or keep in touch with Fabio from your study abroad in Italy…3 years ago. (I know I know, you're meant to be).

Facebook can also be an effective and FREE marketing tool- if done right. Here are some of the best promotional strategies:
  • Fan Pages: They lure in potential clients by allowing them to “like” their page in exchange for exclusive deals, whether they are special content or discounts. Oh, and also free samples...everybody loves free samples.
  • Photo and Video Contests: Companies have been known to add thousands of "fans" in a week, by simply engaging Facebookers in a photo contest.  According to eMarketer, more than 6 BILLION photos are uploaded to Facebook every month.  People love sharing their photos when they are offered official recognition. Total advertising dollars spent: $0. Priceless, literally.
  • Sweepstakes: Giving away free stuff, whether it is taking place online or off is a great way to engage people with your brand. The goal of this strategy is to provide an attractive enough prize that current fans would want to invite their friends to join. Companies from Cheetos to Porshe are offering up free swag through Facebook sweepstakes.
    • Check in: Everybody and their mother (and grandmother) have phones with mobile Internet.  Allow customers to “check in” to your business using features such as Foursquare and Yelp. Let your customers help you get your name out there, free publicity never hurt anybody.  You can also offer customers special deals and coupons when they “check in.”
While it is free, using Facebook to market your business takes time and expertise.
